Minister apologises after child abuse survivor's details were shared in major security breach

An investigation has been launched into a major security breach after a child abuse survivor s private details were uploaded to someone else s myGov account.
Confidential information including the person s address, phone number, bank details and Centrelink number were shared with a complete stranger.
Their application to the national redress scheme, outlining the sexual abuse they suffered, was also shared.
The Brisbane man who received the person s details was also a survivor and found the privacy violation deeply distressing.

Social Services Minister Anne Ruston has apologised for the bureaucratic bungle and breach of trust.
I regret most sincerely this error has occurred and that any trauma or distress that has been caused to the person whose information has been incorrectly uploaded, she told a Senate hearing on Thursday. ....

Homelessness services say frontline staff will be axed, more people will sleep rough and more women fleeing family violence will be forced to live out of their cars if they lose more than $20 million a year in federal funding from July.
The Victorian government has written to the state’s homelessness organisations, warning the federal budget did not renew part of their funding beyond June 30.

'It's a start': First Nations women welcome creation of family violence advisory group


The current 12-year National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children expires next year. 
Human rights lawyer and women s safety advocate, Dr Hannah McGlade told NITV News the announcement is a critical first step, saying Indigenous women, girls and children are facing unacceptable violence. 
Aboriginal mothers in my state in Western Australia are statistically 17 and a half times more likely than non-Aboriginal mothers to be murdered, Dr McGlade told NITV news. 
It s absolutely a pandemic. It s a tsunami, the Noongar woman said. 
Dr McGlade, who is also an expert member of the UN Permanent Forum for Indigenous Issues, said it is vital Indigenous women s voices are prioritised in confronting the violence.  ....
