BOTKINS It’s not easy organizing a blood drive right after New Year’s Day. Susan Leugers does it gladly because it helps Community Blood Center during a time of need, and it honors the memory of the daughter she lost to cancer.
The COVID-19 pandemic added challenges to the 6th annual Chelsea Lukey Memorial Blood Drive, held on Jan. 4, but the result was rewarding. It was CBC’s biggest blood drive of the New Year with 107 donors, including 16 first-time donors, for 118% of collection goal.
For the first time, the blood drive included four donations of COVID-19 convalescent plasma for the treatment of coronavirus patients. Overall, donor registrations increase 50% compared to a year ago. ....

Local blood drives to be held Jan. 4 and 5

BOTKINS Two blood drives will be held in the community the week of Jan. 4.
The sixth annual Chelsea Lukey Memorial Blood Drive will be held Monday, Jan. 4 from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. at The Palazzo, 309 S. Main St., Botkins.
Botkins donor Susan Leugers first organized the blood drive in 2016 as a tribute to her daughter Chelsea, who lost her battle with pancreatic cancer in 2010 at the age of 22. Leugers was willing to move the blood drive to early January to help replenish the holiday blood supply. It is now traditionally one of the first CBC blood drives of the New Year. ....
