Former Sask. poet laureate selected for Parliamentary role

An award-winning Indigenous poet and former residential school student has been selected as the next Parliamentary Poet Laureate.
Louise Bernice Halfe, who is also known by her Cree name, Sky Dancer, has used poetry to confront Canada s fraught history with Indigenous people.
She is Canada s ninth poet laureate. She also was Saskatchewan s second poet laureate.
Raised on the Saddle Lake First Nation in Alberta, Halfe attended Blue Quills Residential School as a child and went on to become a social worker.
The role of the Parliamentary Poet Laureate is to write poetry, especially for use in Parliament on important occasions. ....

1 shot in Saddle Lake home invasion, 3 arrested

A person who police believe broke into a Saddle Lake First Nation home on Jan. 11 is recovering from a gunshot wound.
St. Paul RCMP say around 10:30 that night, they received a call about a gun being discharged during a home invasion.
One person was shot, Mounties say. None of the residents were hurt. 
Three people from the First Nation are facing charges after the event.
Byron Crane, 37, faces six charges including discharge of a firearm with intent and breaking and entering with intent. He is in custody and was scheduled to appear in St. Paul Provincial Court on Thursday. ....

Elk Point RCMP charge man in death of Saddle Lake First Nation woman

A 23-year-old man has been charged in the death of a Saddle Lake First Nation woman.
Elk Point RCMP received a report of a woman’s body located outside of Frog Lake First Nation on December 26 just before 4 p.m. Officers launched an investigation and identified the woman as Louanne Martha Cardinal. They then gathered witness statements with help from the Eastern Alberta District General Investigation Section and Crime Reduction Unit.
The Major Crimes Unit was deployed and took over the investigation on December 28. An autopsy was conducted as well as more interviews and multiple scenes were examined. ....
