Opinion: 1971 to 2021 -- as Bangladesh forges ahead, Pakistan's denial continues


According to the World Bank and IMF, Bangladesh went past India and Pakistan in GDP growth rate and per capita income. In the Sub-continent, Bangladesh topped in seven indicators, India in six, while Pakistan in only one. 
Hot on the heels of this report came another news, which said Bangladesh outshone both India and Pakistan in per capita GDP, and is expected to keep galloping ahead of them in the days to come. 
One thing, however, has been corroborated repeatedly Pakistan is unlikely to rectify itself.
Last December, Bangladesh celebrated the nation s victory in the 1971 Liberation War. On the historic day of December 16, 1971, Pakistan army s General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi along with his 93,000 soldiers surrendered to the joint forces of Bangladesh and India. Heads lowered, they laid down their weapons at the Ramna Race Course ground in presence of the victorious people of Bangladesh. ....

Shahriar Alam to the Pakistani envoy to Dhaka, Imran Ahmed Siddiqui, Pakistan has been asked to apologize for the 1971 war genocide in the country. The year 1971 saw Pakistani troops committing heinous atrocities in the then East Pakistan which subsequently led to the Bangladesh Liberation War 1971. As we celebrate Vijay Diwas, commemorating India’s greatest absolute military victory, it is pertinent to look back at the lessons learnt and their relevance today.
First, after the catastrophic defeat in 1962, the armed forces had been reformed and modernised, and lessons from the stalemate of the 1965 War had been imbibed. Second, defence budget hovered between 3-4 per cent of the GDP from 1962 to 1971, equalled only once more from 1980 to 1990 when the last major reforms took place. Third, the political aim was clearly spelt out — liberate East Pakistan to create Bangladesh. Fourth, there was excellent politico-military dialogue and military advice was paid heed to. Lastly, the armed forces conducted the most brilliant tri-Servi ....
