Photo: Star/FILE Star Business Report Star Business Report The government has lowered the first-year growth target in its Eighth Five-Year Plan compared to its budget projections due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, which forced the country to go into a lockdown that stalled its economy. Besides, recovery from the Covid-19 fallout has been partially mired by a second wave of infections worldwide. As per the Eighth Five-Year Plan, the government has set a target of 7.40 per cent GDP growth for FY21, which is 80 basis points lower than the budget s growth plan of 8.20 per cent. ....

Formulate another stimulus package Unb, Dhaka Unb, Dhaka Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday asked the finance ministry and other related ministries and divisions to formulate another financial stimulus package plan keeping a possible second wave of Covid-19 in consideration. The premier gave the order at a meeting at the Gono Bhaban. The meeting was held to finalise the 8th Fifth Year Plan (2021-2025). PM s Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Jahid Tusher briefed reporters after the meeting. Bangladesh makes great strides in human progress REZAUL KARIM 21st December, 2020 10:42:05 Bangladesh has made an impressive improvement in human development this year with remarkable progress in many socioeconomic areas, including life expectancy and per capita income. The Human Development Index (HDI) 2020 shows Bangladesh has moved two notches up, ranking 133rd position this year from last year’s 135th position. Bangladesh has ranked fifth among eight South Asian countries, says a global HDI report released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). “Bangladesh s HDI value has increased by 60.4 percent. The country’s 2019 HDI is above the average for countries in the medium human development group,” the report states. ....
The Eighth Five Year Plan (8FYP) of Bangladesh is going to be finalised and approved soon. The duration of the Seventh Five Year Plan (7FYP) ended in June 2020. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic the 8FYP has been delayed. The General Economics Division of the Planning Commission (GED) had to revisit and revise the targets and strategies in view of the pandemic. Once the final 8FYP is approved at the National Economic Council it will be implemented during 2021-25. Available documents indicate that the 8FYP titled Promoting Prosperity and Fostering Inclusiveness , focuses on a pro-poor growth strategy. This strategy includes seven themes. These are labour-intensive, export-oriented manufacturing-led growth, agricultural diversification, dynamism in cottage, small and medium enterprises, modern services sector, ICT based entrepreneurship, and overseas employment. ....
