SA sees spike in recent air crashes

South Africa reported 14 air crashes in January 2021 alone, the highest number since Black October 2008.
EIGHT PEOPLE DIED IN FOURTEEN AIR CRASHES
The Director of the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), Poppy Khoza, says four of these January aircraft accidents were fatal with eight people losing their lives.
According to SACAA, this is the highest number of accidents since what has become known as Black October 2008 in which 20 accidents occurred, killing 26 people.

Preliminary investigations into the accidents reveal the causes include human error by flight crew, followed âby aircraft operations and then mechanical or engine failureâ. Khoza says the causes of the crashes are nothing new, so she asks why are they reoccurring. âCould it be a matter of attitude and not necessarily aptitude?â ....

THE South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) has called for an investigation into an alleged âshow off sessionâ by a pilot in a Robinson R22 helicopter yesterday.
In a video clip, the pilot is seen entertaining friends at a braai. SACAAâs director of civil aviation, Poppy Khoza, said a regulation enforcement investigation was under way regarding this incident.
The manner in which the helicopter is flown goes against all characteristics of good airmanship, and possibly also against flight operations law and aircraft limitations. Regardless, the investigation will reveal the real facts regarding this matter,â Khoza said. ....

Aviation safety regulator sounds alarm after 14 accidents in January

In January 2021 there were 14 accidents reported to the SA Civil Aviation Authority

SACAA is concerned over what it regards as a recent spike in aircraft accidents.

to wonder whether the causes were more related to attitude and not necessarily aptitude .
The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) is sounding warning bells to all operators to ensure strict adherence to aviation safety and security regulations.
It would appear that the general aviation sector has not fully adopted the safety principles that are applied in the commercial scheduled operations or airline sector, which has not recorded a passenger fatality airline accident in more than 30 years on South African soil, says SACAA CEO Poppy Khoza. This is a record we are proud of and want the general aviation sector to emulate. A series of events usually lead to an accident. ....
