The most direct route through the Far North is now open to all vehicles except those over dimension, with extensive repair work on State Highway 1 in the Mangamuka Gorge almost complete.
“People driving through will be able to see first-hand the amount of remedial work carried out including our 135m long 4m high retaining wall. But we encourage road users to drive carefully as the road alignment has changed and road shoulders have been reshaped,” says Jacqui Hori-Hoult, Waka Kotahi Regional Manager Te Tai Tokerau me Tāmaki Makaurau.
While Waka Kotahi will be allowing vehicles through from 6pm on June 30, temporary traffic management will be in place for a small section of the gorge where it will be reduced to one lane, so crew have enough space to be able to finish work on the largest retaining wall.

Far North road to open a year after storm caused massive slips

The Mangamuka gorge in the Far North will re-open this evening, after being damaged in a storm last year.

A deluge last July caused slips that closed more than a dozen roads, including State Highway 1 through the gorge.
The highway was the most direct route through the region and its closure had caused drivers to face longer travel times, Transport Agency Waka Kotahi regional manager Jacqui Hori-Hoult said.
"Given the importance of this connection it was crucial we not only carried out repairs, but also installed drainage works to limit damage from future weather events," Hori-Hoult said.

State Highway 1 to Kaitaia opens a year after devastating Northland floods

A total of five retaining walls have been built as part of the repairs to State Highway 1 at Mangamuka Gorge.
For those living south of the slips, the drive time to Kaitaia doubled from 30 minutes each way to an hour.
The closure has also impacted the Bay of Islands and Doubtless Bay communities on the alternate route north, State Highway 10, which has been marred by congestion and crashes.
For Mangamuka Dairy owner Eliza Kete, the official opening is a bit of an anti-climax.
“It’s going to be great that it’s going to be open, but because we’ve waited such a long time we’re not overly excited now.”

An early settler cemetery in Northland's Kaeo has been painstakingly moved and restored, after it was in danger of falling onto the state highway.
Historic graves in danger of slipping onto a state highway have been moved and restored after a painstaking five-year journey.
The graves of William Spickman, an early Pākehā settler of Northland's Kaeo, and his relatives were in danger of falling onto State Highway 10 due to long-term deterioration and a slip caused by heavy rain.
Spickman, who died in 1881, was one of the earliest, if not the earliest, Europeans recorded to have settled in the Kaeo area, where he set up a thriving timber business.

A three-bedroom, two-bathroom Waipū property has sold for $1.615 million under the hammer after being brought forward with an agreed opening sum of $1.4m.
After three registered bidders competed to the tune of 39 bids, the eventual buyers of 111 Massey Rd were a couple who work in digital animation and can work from home.
Ray White Bream Bay salesman James Alexander, who called the auction from the front lawn of the property, said the bidding was an absolute frenzy from the get-go.
