No matter whether there is a pandemic or not, one reason remained active for causing deaths of people - road accidents.
Though the government declared a lockdown from April 5, public transport was suspended on April 14. But that couldn’t stop accidents on roads.
According to road transport experts, the number of road accidents has reduced a bit but the rate of accidents compared to the number of transports on roads remains alarming.
According to Road Safety Foundation, around 332 accidents took place in the country since the beginning of lockdown and a total of 397 people were killed in these accidents. ....

Reducing Fatalities on Roads: Aim gets lowered

As road safety authority failed to achieve the target to halve the number of road accident fatalities by last year, it is now going to extend the deadline by another 10 years.
As part of a new action plan, the authority wants to reduce 20 to 25 percent of road accident fatalities and injuries by the end of the 2024 by setting the National Road Safety Strategic Action Plan-2021-2024 into motion.
A draft of the action plan has already been prepared and is expected to be placed before today s meeting of National Road Safety Council (NRSC) for approval, said Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Chairman Nur Mohammad Mazumder while speaking to The Daily Star yesterday. ....

Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (Bangladesh Passengers Welfare Association), a passengers welfare platform, has demanded the formation of an emergency assistance fund to help the victims of road accidents.
The general secretary of the samity, Mohammad Mozammel Haque, made the demand at a press conference held in the auditorium of the Bangladesh Crime Reporters Association in the capital on Monday.
In order to provide financial support, the general secretary of the samity demanded that Tk 5 lakh should be given to the injured and Tk 20 lakh to the families of individual victims. ....

7,317 people killed in accidents in 2020
A total of 7,317 people were killed and 9,021 others injured in 5,397 road, railway and waterway accidents across the country in 2020.
Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, a passengers’ welfare platform, disclosed the matter in a press conference held in front of Jatiya Press Club on Saturday morning.
The report was made based on news published in daily national and local news papers and online news portals.
Of them, 4,891 road accidents claimed the lives of 6,686 people and 8,600 others injured while 318 people were killed and 79 others injured in 323 railway accidents and 183 accidents on waterways left 313 people dead, and 342 others injured and 317 more missing. ....
