ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is laying out guidelines to resume in-person classes at schools across the country, guidelines many of us have heard before: Mask wearing, social distancing and washing your hands.

St. Johns County teachers: Enact policy for employee COVID leave


St. Johns County teachers will go to the negotiation table on Jan. 19 to ask the district to consider a plan that would allow instructors to take medical leave for COVID-19 rather than use personal sick days.
Educators in the school district, like so many others across the country, are seeking help to fill the gap created by the non-renewal of a policy under the federal Families First Coronavirus Response Act.
The legislation, enacted April 1, allowed for full-time employees to receive up to 100% of their regular salary for as many as 10 work days based on several qualifying factors, including an employee testing positive for the virus, being placed under quarantine or taking care of a loved one with COVID-19. In other circumstances related to the coronavirus, employees could receive a partial take of their salary. ....

This could be a problem for teachers who might become exposed or contract the virus over Christmas break.
Because the emergency leave from the federal Families First Coronavirus Response Act ends on the last day of the year, and students return on Jan. 4, if a teacher who has to quarantine over the break may have to start the year without special emergency leave.
On the final day before Christmas break, St. Johns County teachers got an email from Superintendent Tim Forson notifying them of the expiration. ....
