Non-profit aims to help youth with community garden in 'underserved' area of Prince Albert

SASKATOON
A Prince Albert non-profit is hoping to increase opportunities for families in the west flat with a community garden.
The Girardi Foundation began fundraising efforts about a year ago to build Harley’s House, a semi-independent transition home for people ages 18 to 21. Harley’s Community Garden will be located next to the home.
“You can’t move forward with a mindset that keeps you in poverty, and this garden will actually educate that,” said executive director David Girardi.
“It will show that how you do one thing in life is how you can do everything. If you can plant a garden, you can go out and get that next career move. You can go out and achieve those goals. It will teach that consistency and give people that certainty and hope.” ....

The Prince Albert non profit with a plan to build the Harley’s House youth home is looking to engage the community through the creation of a community garden in the West Flat.
They see the Harley’s Garden as a way to connect to the community before construction of the semi independent transitional housing project begins.
“The garden is a way for us to create certainty with the community for our overall project of the Harley’s House project. We have had to make some amendments to it but so far so good. We have raised $50,000 so far from Malcolm Jenkins and we have about four or five other corporate sponsors at this time also looking to jump on board,” Girardi Foundation executive director David Girardi said. ....

Local signature coffee blend to help fund young adult transitional home

The people behind the construction of a semi-independent, transition complex for young adults in Prince Albert, have come up with a stimulating way to fundraise for the build, as well as help cover their future operating expenses.
Harley’s House Coffee is now available for online orders. Dave Girardi, executive director of the Girardi Foundation, said the idea and formula for their own signature blend was sprouted locally, but the coffee itself is manufactured in Alberta, and the beans, grown ethically, come from all over the world.
“People are kind of pulling back on donations [right now] and more focused on buying consumables,” he said. ....
