Serial rapist's bid for freedom hits snag | Sunshine Coast Daily


Notorious gang rapist Mohammed Skaf will remain behind bars, for now, after his latest bid for freedom hit another roadblock as the end of his lengthy sentence looms.
The 37-year-old is fighting for external leave after spending two decades behind bars after he and his elder brother Bilal led the infamous Skaf rape gang that assaulted young women on a four-week rampage before the 2000 Olympics.
Dressed in prison greens, Mohammed Skaf appeared before a NSW State Parole Board review hearing at Parramatta on Friday via video link from Junee Correctional Centre.
He listened intently as he waited to hear whether his latest bid for freedom would be granted. ....

Thirty years ago on Thursday, the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody handed down 339 recommendations to stop our brothers, sisters, parents and children losing their lives in the care of the state.
Since then, very few of those recommendations have been meaningfully implemented. Meanwhile, more than 470 more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have died gasping for breath on cold prison floors, slumped over in watch-houses, roasting in the back of paddy-wagons, impaled upon fences or drowned in rivers while running from police who they had ....

Swimming great Scott Miller and three members of his alleged $2.2million meth syndicate are all facing the potential of spending the rest of their lives in jail.  
A fourth member of the alleged ring has been hit with fresh charges which carry the maximum penalty available under New South Wales law. 
Luke Mathew Peake was originally charged only with possessing meth but has now been accused of supplying a large commercial quantity of drugs. 
He has also been charged with participating in a criminal group allegedly headed by Miller.   ....

Rail enthusiasts have had the chance to take a step back in time, with the iconic steam locomotive 3801 making its return to the train tracks in regional NSW.
Key points:
It is the only steam locomotive to travel to all mainland Australian states and territories

A fourth member of swimming great Scott Miller s alleged $2.2million drug ring has been charged, weeks after the Olympian s dramatic arrest. 
Unlike Miller and two other co-accused, Luke Matthew Peake is not facing a potential life sentence if convicted over his alleged role in the syndicate. 
Peake was arrested at Junee prison, where he was in custody for other unrelated alleged offences. 
The 40-year-old was one of two men who allegedly collected 4kg of meth from Miller after the Olympic silver medallist drove the consignment from Sydney halfway to the Victorian border.  ....
