The Archbishop and the boiling of frogs


A recording started making the rounds, featuring the Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur, Julian Leow Beng Kim
(pic), giving a speech at an undetermined event.
This recording was then uploaded to the Internet by a group that claimed that in that recording, Leow said he wanted to do something like “boil the Muslims slowly like frogs”.
This has become yet another major facepalm moment for Malaysia.
Dutiful columnist that I am, I took the time to listen to the whole recording.
What the Archbishop was actually talking about was a sentiment that minority rights were slowly being eroded in Malaysia.
He gave the following analogy: If a frog is thrown into boiling water, it will surely notice immediately. If it is put in water that is boiled very, very slowly, the frog may not notice as much. ....

| The Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism (MCCBCHST) strongly urges the menteri besar of Kedah to reinstate the
cuti peristiwa for Thaipusam in the state by respecting the freedom of religion as protected by our Federal Constitution. 
MCCBCHST stresses that there is no place for religious repression which is against the fundamental rights of non-Muslims guaranteed to all persons by Articles 5-13 of the Federal Constitution.
Thaipusam is a religious event celebrated by Hindus throughout the world and in Malaysia annually. 
As the majority of Indians in Malaysia are Hindus, Thaipusam celebration, therefore, has been proclaimed as a public holiday in the states with a high concentration of Hindus.  ....

The Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia has suspended all public Masses in all parishes, churches and chapels during the Christmas season due to public health concerns related to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Archbishop Julian Leow Beng Kim of Kuala Lumpur has decided to suspend all Masses from Christmas Eve on Dec. 24 until the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord on Jan. 6, according to a notice from the archdiocese’s chancellor Father Michael Chua.
Father Chua said that Archbishop Leow recognizes that the Christmas season is one of the most important and sacred times in the Church s liturgical calendar and he fully understands the passion and devotion of the faithful who wish to come together in public celebration, but the prelate had to come to the difficult decision because of unavoidable circumstanc ....
