CHR probes Ebeng Mayor rape-slay case | Philippines Lifestyle News


The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) launched an investigation on the Ebeng Mayorrape-slay case.
“Such atrocious act epitomizes the reality of members of the LGBTQIA+ community who face higher rates of hate-motivated violence, which can often take the form of sexual violence,” CHR spokesperson Jacqueline de Guia said.
Guia added act of violence further underlines the urgent need to strengthen protections against gender non-conforming persons, address issues of access to justice and strengthen the campaign against hate, stigma and discrimination.
“The Commission has been relentless in pushing for the enactment of the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Expression Equality Bill to provide legal mechanisms to hold to account perpetrators of gender-based discrimination,” De Guia said. ....

Relief volunteers, advocates say junking of charges ‘a vindication’

MANILA – On March 17 last year President Duterte imposed strict quarantine measures supposedly to suppress the rise of Covid-19 cases in the country.
Curfews were set and checkpoints were put in place to regulate people’s mobility. Uniformed men, some with firearms, were visible on the streets, enforcing quarantine measures.
Rights groups observed that the imposition of these measures are oppressive, especially among the most vulnerable sectors. And those who sought redress for the government’s lack of relief measures were arrested. Even relief workers from people’s organizations and non-government organizations were arrested for providing much needed food and supplies to poor communities. ....
