THUNDER BAY - More and more municipalities across Canada are taking a stand against the widely discredited use of conversion therapy and Thunder Bay could be the latest city to look at ways of enacting policies banning the practice.
Northwood Coun. Shelby Ch’ng will be presenting a motion before council next Monday asking the city to support and advocate for Bill C-6, which proposes to amend the Criminal Code of Canada to include conversion therapy related offences, as well as direct city administration to examine ways the city can support the intent of Bill C-6 through such means as planning and development, business licensing, and engaging with local organizations and agencies. ....

Conversion therapy debate underway at Regina committee meeting

Regina’s Community Wellness Committee heard from the second half of delegations scheduled to speak about the City’s next steps to address conversion therapy.
The first half of the meeting took place on Wednesday, and it continued on Monday.
A recommendation put before the committee said mayor Sandra Masters should write to the federal government on behalf of the city in support of Bill C-6.
Bill C-6 would criminalize aspects of conversion therapy, which the City describes as “a practice that seeks to change a person’s sexual orientation to heterosexual, to repress non-heterosexual attraction or behaviours, or to change an individual’s gender identity to match the sex they were assigned at birth.” ....

Saskatoon city council has approved a draft bylaw that would ban conversion therapy within city limits.
In a 10-1 vote, councillors agreed to have administration bring the bylaw forward at an upcoming council meeting for consideration. It will need to pass three readings in council before becoming law. Ward 5 Coun. Randy Donauer was the opposition vote.
The bylaw would make it illegal for businesses to provide conversion therapy, which is defined as a service intended to change someone s sexual orientation or identity. Anyone providing conversion therapy could face a fine of $10,000 for individuals or $25,000 for corporations. ....
