A Mishawaka man died after his vehicle left the road and caught fire Thursday afternoon on U.S. 12 west of Birch Road in Cass County.
According to a release from Cass County Sheriff Richard J. Behnke, a vehicle driven by Douglas Vankirk, 63, of Mishawaka, appeared to be traveling east on U.S. 12 about 12:46 p.m. when he reportedly lost control and ran off the road, striking several trees. The vehicle reportedly came to a stop and caught fire.
First responders attempted to pull Vankirk from the vehicle, but he was entrapped and succumbed to his injuries at the scene, the sheriff said. Airbags did deploy, and it is unknown if a seatbelt was worn. ....
