A lawyer from Sydney’s upper north shore has spent the night in custody after being charged over his alleged involvement in a $2.3 million international cryptocurrency scam.
The 38-year-old solicitor, from Turramurra, was arrested at Day Street police station just after 5pm on Wednesday and charged with four counts of recklessly dealing with the proceeds of crime.
Since 2019, police have been investigating reports from four men who believed they were defrauded by a “suspected cryptocurrency scam”.
Officers were told the men had responded to an online advertisement about cryptocurrency trading and liaised with an “unknown person” to deposit the money to trade in digital currencies. ....

An alleged cryptocurrency scam operating out of the Middle East has seen four Australians lose more than $2.3million, as a Sydney lawyer is charged.
The alleged victims told police they have been defrauded by a suspected cybercurrency scam back in 2019.
They had responded to an online advert and then spoke to an unknown person to deposit money to trade in cybercurrencies.
Between December 2018 and March 2019, the four men – who were then aged between 69 and 95 – deposited a total of $2,311,000 into various Australian bank accounts.
Inquiries revealed the Australian accounts, which had subsequently been closed by the bank due to suspicious transactions, were all linked to a Sydney-based solicitor. ....

What does it mean to be an Australian citizen? Evidently not much (“Government cannot treat citizens as pariahs”, May 6). The government has removed our right to return home if we are in India in real, present danger. The danger of spreading infection is the rationale. In fact, the danger of infection faced by our compatriots is not a reason to fend them off: it is the reason for their rescue.
Throughout the 18th, 19th centuries and early 20th century immigrants on boats from the UK who stopped in pestilent ports on the way here were quarantined. Like the troops returning during the Spanish flu pandemic. The 1830 quarantine station in Sydney Harbour is the evidence of what our government refuses to do now: purpose build safe places to receive us when we come home. ....

In order for a country to progress, we constantly need to refer to our past to light our path (“Fears nation risks memory loss as cuts run deep in National Archives”, April 26). If we allow our heritage, culture and history to disappear, valuing only those memories relating to war and conflict, we risk socially engineering Australia into a place whose values are false and shallow. Conservative governments have ruled federally for eight long years. In that time, ambition, monetary success and strident individualism have too frequently nudged aside the common good. If we don’t value the wisdom sequestered in our national memory, the past will indeed be a foreign country. ....

This year several COVID-safe community services are being held to commemorate ANZAC Day.
Ku-ring-gai’s commemorations of Australia’s most solemn military day will commence on Sunday 25 April with two dawn services at Roseville RSL Memorial and Bicentennial Park, West Pymble. The dawn service at Roseville Memorial Park, 62 Pacific Highway will be held from 5am on ANZAC Day. The President of the Roseville RSL Sub Branch and Mayor Jennifer Anderson will deliver speeches at the service on behalf of the Ku-ring-gai community. An ANZAC Day dawn service coordinated by the Sydney North Region Scouts and Girl Guides Australia will be held at Bicentennial Park, West Pymble between 5.30am and 6am on the day. ....
