PH agri sector remains vulnerable

The Philippines’ agriculture sector has survived a volcano eruption that blanketed tons of farm yield with ashes and sustained production within three quarters into the pandemic, but it only took three typhoons to expose its vulnerability.
And Federation of Free Farmers (FFF) National Manager Raul Montemayor has one piece of advice to the government, which is to focus on helping farmers and fishermen recover.

Palay prices pick up in most areas

However, in some areas, prices still fell to as low as P10.71 per kilogram (/kg).
During the first week of November, the average farmgate price of palay increased to P15.41/kg or by 0.4 percent during the period, from its level of P15.35/kg in the previous week.

Meanwhile, it declined at an annual rate of 1.3 percent, from its average price of P15.61/kg in the same week of the previous year.
PSA’s weekly farmgate prices of palay report showed that some areas enjoyed prices as high as P20/kg, while the average price settled at P15.41/kg. ....

THE Department of Agriculture (DA) in Western Visayas has stressed the need to sustain rice sufficiency in the country amid the prevailing coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.
DA-Western Visayas Director Remelyn Recoter, who spoke at the 2019 Rice Achievers Awards in Iloilo City on Monday, December 14, emphasized the huge role of rice farmers and agriculture extension workers (AEWs) in this bid.

Biggest rice importer PH lessens imports this year

As a result of the government’s decision to regulate the issuance of import permits on rice, the Philippines will now end the year with slightly lower imports of the staple.
Despite this, the country is still poised to retain its status as the world’s top rice importer.
In its latest report on global rice production, the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) forecast for the Philippines’ 2020 rice imports has been reduced from 2.5 million metric tons (MT) to 2.3 million MT.
This, according to USDA, was because of the Philippines’ Department of Agriculture’s (DA) decision not to issue additional import permits for the remainder of the year. ....
