Health chief: ICU beds in Sarawak full, public must do its part to cut Covid-19 infections

KUCHING: Sarawak hospitals intensive care unit (ICU) beds for Covid-19 patients are full, says state health director Dr Chin Zin Hing.
Appealing to the public to play its part, he said there was an urgent need to cut Covid-19 transmissions to reduce the number of hospital admissions.
Our ICU beds are full across the state. The doctors are working very hard every day to turn over the ventilators or ICU beds so that the next patient in need can benefit.
At current moment, in all major Sarawak hospitals, we are running 92 ICU beds – all full, he said in a statement on Monday (May 17), adding that each bed was used for 10 days on average. ....

Covid-19: Public gatherings main cause of spike in cases, clusters, says Sarawak health chief

KUCHING: Public gatherings are the main factor behind the spike in Covid-19 cases and clusters in Sarawak this year, says state Health director Dr Chin Zin Hing.
He said an analysis by the Health Department indicated that funerals contributed to four clusters ranging from 25 to 2,000 cases each, while social gatherings led to 11 clusters with 17 to 61 cases each.
There are also five workplace clusters with 10 to 35 cases each and a wedding cluster with 187 cases.
We need everyone s cooperation to avoid large gatherings which have a high risk of spreading Covid-19, Dr Chin said in a statement on Friday (Feb 26).
He said failure to observe standard operating procedures (SOP) such as wearing face masks, physical distancing and hand hygiene also contributed to the emergence of these new clusters. ....

Covid-19: Sarawak sees downward trend in infectivity rate

SIBU: The Covid-19 infectivity rate (R0) in Sarawak went down from 1.41 on Jan 14 to 0.96 as of Tuesday (Feb 9).
The state s daily case tally also dropped from 255 cases on Jan 14 to 101 cases on Tuesday, state Health Department director Dr Chin Zin Hing (
pic) told a press conference on Wednesday (Feb 10).
With control measures in place, the R0 stayed at 1.0 until yesterday (Feb 9) when it dropped to 0.96.
Hopefully this (downward) trend will continue but we need to work together with all the control measures and SOPs to keep it below 1.0 and control this outbreak, he said.
State Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who chaired the press conference, said the improvement was because everyone had been complying with the SOP. ....

Covid-19 vaccine: S'wak GH among nine centres selected for international clinical trial

KUCHING: The state Health Department confirms that the Covid-19 vaccine trial to be conducted by the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) here will involve the vaccine developed by the Institute of Molecular Biology, China Academy of Medical Sciences (IMBCAMS).
State health director Dr Chin Zin Hing said SGH is one of nine centres under the Health Ministry selected to conduct the international and multi-centre clinical trials.
Clinical trials are an essential and fundamental process in the development of new medical treatments, including Covid-19 vaccines.
In this particular clinical trial, the Covid-19 vaccine was developed by IMBCAMS, he said Thursday (Jan 7). ....
