Kilkenny College students host virtual tractor run for charity

Sixth-year student Wendy Fairbrother, Co Wicklow, prepares for the virtual Kilkenny College Tractor run.
Kilkenny College’s annual tractor run has become a highlight of the school calendar since its first run in 2013.
Because of COVID-19, it was forced online for the second year in a row, with a video of students driving their tractors at home as well as good wishes from many past pupils being released on the traditional date of the run, the Thursday before the May bank holiday weekend.
Speaking to the
Irish Farmers Journal, deputy principal Aubrey O’Keeffe praised the students involved, ranging from transition to sixth years, for their dedication to the annual event. ....

ACCC wants more competition in agricultural machinery servicing, repair markets

Modern tractors, harvesters and other agricultural machinery use complex computerised systems that involve embedded software and specific tools and parts, and the competition regulator the ACCC says purchasers of the machinery would benefit from more independent competition in servicing and repair markets.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission made its comments after conducting a detailed study of agricultural machinery markets in Australia.
In its report released on Tuesday, the ACCC looks at a range of competition and fair trading issues in markets for the direct sale of agricultural machinery, as well as for after-sales services, such as repairs. ....

Escorts Agri Machinery Segment in April 2021 sold 6,979 tractors registering a growth of 889.9 percent as against 705 tractors sold in April 2020.
Domestic tractor sales in April 2021 were at 6,386 tractors registering a growth of 941.8 percent against 613 tractors in April 2020. The demand in April last year was drastically impacted by Covid-19 national lockdown; so was it in April 2021 although not to the same extent. This time around supply chain had minimal impact from local restrictions owing to the second wave of Covid-19.
This enabled the Company to build some inventory in anticipation of some pent-up demand as the pandemic situation improves. The medium-term macroeconomic factors remain positive on account of record rabi harvest, sustained crop prices, and good prediction of monsoons this year. The second wave of Covid-19 and the resultant restrictions have applied brakes on tractor sales that had been rising over the past 10-11 months, bucking the automotive market trends.
Tractor sales started to move northwards from May 2020 after the partial lifting of the lockdown. The numbers continued to grow in the subsequent months as the rural economy remained robust; the other automotive segments took more time to rebound.

But the second wave has hit all segments. While tractor manufacturers faced production constraints, footfalls at dealerships dropped as cases surged in small towns and rural areas. As a result, sales took a beating in April. ....
