Treat fishing crimes like every other crime – Prof. Wisdom Akpalu

A fisheries economist, Prof. Wisdom Akpalu, has bemoaned the lack of prosecution, or, the relaxed prosecution of fishing-related crimes, which he believes are handled with kid gloves, thereby encouraging more people to consider it as a lucrative business area.
He explained that with statistics over the years showing that perpetrators of crimes on the seas are let off the hook, or, never quite given the deserved punishments, it makes it almost acceptable for people to continue to perpetuate illegalities on the seas.
This, he added, has become the case because the offenders of such crimes easily get away from being appropriately reprimanded. ....

'Saiko' Fishing Will Not Stop If…– Prof. Akpalu

The Director of the Environment and Natural Resource Research Initiative (ENRRI – EfD Ghana), Professor Wisdom Akpalu says illegal transshipment of fish on Ghana s waters which is popularly called Saiko will not stop if offenders are not severely punished.
He said the saiko business is very lucrative and that fishers prefer to engage in the illegality and pay less fines than conforming to right methods of fishing.
Crime is business so they compare cost and benefits… so if the cost is less than the benefits, they engage in that, he explained, saying every criminal is a rational economic being.

The Head of the Economics Department of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Dr Kwami Adanu, has suggested that Ghana could adopt plastic incineration as a key part of any effective plastic waste management policy.
According to him, government must build incinerators in each district or locality of the country to cater for plastic waste.
He noted that among the various plastic waste management methods, plastic incineration has been identified as one of the easiest and cheapest ways of managing plastics globally. ....

Making a presentation on “Managing Plastic Waste in Ghana” at a round table discussion organised by the Environment and Natural Resource Research Initiative (ENRRI – EfD Ghana) on December 3, 2020 at GIMPA, Dr Adanu said, although incineration would help to reduce the volume of plastic waste in the country, it would not eliminate the problem entirely. ....
