Green councillor chosen as Glasgow's new Depute Lord Provost


The Anderston/City/Yorkhill councillor has been chosen for the role
A new Depute Lord Provost has been chosen in Glasgow.
Green Councillor, Christy Mearns, was elected by her fellow councillors and will be officially appointed at a meeting of the council on Thursday.
She will be Depute to Lord Provost, Philip Braat for the rest of the council term, until next May.

It means Glasgow will have a Green councillor as Depute Lord Provost, when the city hosts the UN COP 26 climate change summit later this year.
Ms Mearns said: “I am delighted to have been elected to serve as our city’s next Depute Lord Provost. As a young woman and new parent, I am thrilled to be able to bring more diversity to the civic realm of the council; we are always stronger the more we work together, across ages, genders, backgrounds and political affiliations. ....

THE CAMPAIGN to elect Glasgow’s new Depute Lord Provost continues as voting will now be carried out via a postal ballot.
There are now two candidates nominated for the role, Labour’s Maureen Burke and Green councillor Christy Mearns.

Both councillors had the opportunity to tell members why they should be elected during the full council meeting yesterday morning.
Labour councillor Maureen Burke spoke first. She said: “I have spent a lot of time thinking about what I can bring to the role of Depute Lord Provost and how I can support the Bailies, councillors and the city’s other ancient institutions. ....
