$100M NSW Battery to Support Coal Power Replacement
The New South Wales (NSW) Government has announced it will be supporting the construction of a new $100 million (US$78 million) battery as part of a plan to substitute electricity generation after the planned closure of the Liddell coal-fired power plant in 2023.
The decision comes amid NSW’s recent power grid instability, which saw one of Australia’s largest aluminium smelters forced to power down several times in a month after power shortages and energy prices skyrocketed by 18,000 percent.
“The NSW Government is the second biggest energy customer in the state,” NSW Minister for Energy and Environment said in a media release. “This battery will help to keep the lights on and keep costs down during peak energy periods and support more renewable energy to come online.” ....

The demonisation of coal-fired power will lead to unaffordable energy prices, according to Sky News host Alan Jones.
Last week, the Tomago smelter in NSW, one of Australia s biggest electricity users, shut down three times, Mr Jones said.
The power price, normally between $50 a megawatt hour and $100, climbed, at one stage, to $14,500 per megawatt hour. Why?
Tomago shut down, because it couldn t afford the price.
This is where we are heading with this demonisation of coal-fired power. In the end, massive businesses like the Tomago smelter in NSW will have to close. ....

The chief executive of Snowy Hydro, Paul Broad, has known the part-owner of the Kurri Kurri site, where a new taxpayer-funded gas plant will be developed, for 40 years but says he recused himself from negotiations about the land.
Broad told a Senate estimates hearing on Tuesday evening he had known Hunter Valley property developer Jeff McCloy since they were at university together.
McCloy, who is redeveloping the Kurri Kurri site, has previously told the Independent Commission Against Corruption in New South Wales he gave thousands in secret donations to state Liberal candidates and felt âlike a walking ATMâ. ....
