NSW council declares a housing emergency

A council in NSW has declared a housing emergency due to a lack of availability and affordability.
Earlier this month, the council of Tweed Shire, located in northers NSW, declared a housing emergency, noting that a growing number of residents were now finding they could no longer afford to live in the Shire.
The boom can be attributed to a pre-existing lack of affordability and available housing, which was accentuated by COVID, the Mayor of Tweed Chris Cherry said.
“What we are now seeing is a marked acceleration in this trend caused by people moving from cities and buying properties in the Tweed,” Ms Cherry said. ....

Council has declared a housing emergency in the Tweed due to a lack of availability and affordability.
At its meeting on Thursday 15 April 2021, Council resolved to write to the Federal and State governments asking both to explore further opportunities for additional social and affordable housing in the Tweed.
Mayor of Tweed Chris Cherry said a growing number of residents were now finding they could no longer afford to live in the Shire.
“Council highlighted the lack of affordable and available housing in the Tweed back in 2018. COVID has accentuated this and what we are now seeing is a marked acceleration in this trend caused by people moving from cities and buying properties in the Tweed,” she said. ....

Federal Government grants for infrastructure improvements – Tweed – The Echo

Tweed Shire Council today announced more than $3.75 million in Federal Government grants for 10 infrastructure projects in the area.
The projects are being supported by funding from the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program Phase 2.
In announcing the funding, Member for Richmond Justine Elliot said that as the local federal MP I’m proud to be delivering this federal funding for our region. ‘Congratulations to Tweed Shire Council for securing these important grants. They will make a vital difference in building and upgrading community projects throughout the Tweed Shire.’ ....

Jack Evans Boat Harbour plan adopted for Tweed Heads community
Tweed Heads Shire Council has adopted a Plan of Management endorsed by the NSW Government to ensure Crown land at the Jack Evans Boat Harbour precinct can serve as a recreational and tourism focal point for the Tweed Heads region.
The plan, which was subject to community consultation, sets out the future planning and management of the popular precinct. It covers several parklands in the area, the northern and western sections of the waterway and some sections of Ebenezer Park.
Mayor of Tweed Chris Cherry said the plan’s adoption will ensure priorities to enhance, protect and manage the precinct are delivered and the plan meets the needs of the Tweed community now and into the future. ....
