The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has identified 17 burial grounds and crematoriums in various zones for the performing the final rituals of COVID-19 patients.
The move would ease the pressure on the crematorium at Gnanapuram, the officials said.
The GVMC officials have attached burial grounds to various COVID-19 hospitals. The final rites of the COVID patients dying at the Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) and Pineapple Colony COVID Care Centre will be performed at the Krishnapuram burial ground. Similarly, the bodies of the patients from the King George Hospital (KGH) and 12 other hospitals in the city limites will be sent to the crematorium at Gnanapuram. ....

At a time when controversy continues to rage over under-reporting of COVID-19 deaths, one crematorium in Odisha was found to have recorded 3,978 bodies in the second half of 2020 twice the State’s total COVID-19 toll during the corresponding period.
Information provided by the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) in response to an RTI application says a total of 4,473 bodies were cremated at Satya Nagar crematorium in 2020. ....

JALANDHAR: A video of a man carrying the body of his daughter, 11, for cremation has gone viral on social media. It shows a man, identified as Dalip from Ram Nagar locality in Jalandhar, carrying his daughter’s body on his shoulder for the last rites and his young son walking close behind.’ A video of the incident came out late on Friday night, five days after the incident took place.
A quick inquiry ordered by Jalandhar deputy commissioner Ghanshyam Thori on Saturday revealed that the girl had never tested positive for Covid-19 and was in fact admitted to the surgical ward of Guru Nanak Hospital attached with Government Medical College, Amritsar. A certificate issued by the hospital for the purpose of transportation of the body also mentioned that she was diagnosed with SAIO (subacute intestinal obstruction). It stated that she was admitted there on May 7. ....
