Nigerian Customs Service is a major revenue-generating agency in the country but you always complain that it is not generating enough revenue. What really is the problem?
If the Nigerian government wants the Nigerian Customs Service to generate N4trn every year, it is possible but the agency must be adequately funded. There must be proper monitoring of its activities and operations. Also, the government has to change the leadership of the NCS. Freight forwarders are not convinced that the perennial gridlock issues faced at the Lagos port will subside.
This is following the decision of the Lagos State Government to take over the control of Apapa gridlock from the Federal Task Force.
In a series of interviews, some of the freight forwarders who spoke to our correspondent were unsure anything good would come out from the intervention.
A freight forwarder, Gbemi Ola, said, “The rot is deeper than this ill-advised frenzy. I don’t think anything will change.”
He noted that he was presented with the opportunity of participating in a questionnaire or survey but was not keen on participating because he was not sure any of his contributions in abating the traffic would be entertained. ....

Apapa gridlock: FG to deploy 200 security officers

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has completed plans to deploy 200 security officers to Apapa and Tin-Can Ports to clear the gridlock on the routes.
The security personnel are expected to ensure that no vehicle parks along the road.
Mrs Taiye Elebiyo-Edeni, media assistant to the minister, said Amaechi disclosed this during a meeting with Maritime Stakeholders and the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria in Lagos.
The union had threatened to go on strike if the government failed to address the gridlock on the route.
Amaechi, however, said that there should be a steering committee headed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Magdalene Ajani, to seat monthly until the challenges were overcome. ....

FG to deploy 200 Security Officers to Tin Can, Apapa Ports to prevent gridlock -

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has said that 200 security officers would be deployed to Apapa and Tin-Can Ports to clear the gridlock on the route and enforce compliance on truck not to park on the road.
Mr Amaechi disclosed this during a meeting with Maritime Stakeholders and the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) in Lagos.
The union had threatened to go on strike if government failed to address the gridlock on the route.
He, however, said that there should be a Steering Committee headed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Magdalene Ajani, to seat monthly until the challenges are overcome. ....
