Status of the Guidelines
After a substantial period following the passing of Law No. 13 of 2016 on the Protection of Personal Data Privacy (the Data Protection Law), the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) in January 2021 issued a set of guidelines on Personal Data Privacy Protection Law (the Guidelines). This is a positive development as it provides greater clarity on the implementation of the Data Protection Law. Pursuant to the Guidelines, the Compliance and Data Protection department (CDP) at the MoTC is indicated as the competent department for implementing the Data Protection Law and for clarifying and developing related controls and procedures.

PETALING JAYA: There is a need for a revision of legislation covering personal data if security breaches are to be avoided, or at the very least minimised, cyber security experts told

Assoc Prof Dr Selvakumar Manickam of Universiti Sains Malaysia said data breaches can be extremely damaging, citing the leak involving Malaysian telcos in 2016, which gave rise to Macau scams.
“As we rely more on online services, we have to share our personal data with these service providers to ensure smooth delivery of their services,” he said.

Doha - Marking the Data Privacy Day, the Compliance and Data Protection Department at the Ministry of Transport and Communications has announced the release of the guidelines of the Personal Data Privacy Protection Law No. (13) of 2016 to help the target audience, individuals, regulated entities and stakeholders understand their respective responsibilities, rights and practices as per the said law.
On this occasion, Acting Assistant Undersecretary of Cyber Security Affairs at MOTC Othman Salem Al Hamoud, said, In the context of MOTCs commitment to overseeing the implementation of the Personal Data Privacy Protection Law, we are pleased to announce the release of the guidelines of the Personal Data Privacy Protection Law No. 13 of 2016, which provide a set of guidelines, controls, assistive tools, checklists and templates for regulated entities addressed by the provisions of the law to support compliance to the law. They also include guidance for individuals to become more aware of their rights and responsibilities as per the law.
