A section of railway in eastern Taiwan that was damaged in a deadly train crash on April 2 reopened yesterday, with the first train on the route departing at 5:27am.
Train services were able to resume after the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) on Friday completed its repairs and safety inspections on the track in the area of the Cingshuei Tunnel (清水隧道) in Hualien County, where the accident occurred, killing 49 people and injuring at least 200. ....

The Executive Yuan yesterday appointed Deputy Minister of Transportation and Communications Wang Kwo-tsai (王國材) as the new minister of transportation.
Wang is to succeed Minister of Transportation and Communications Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍), who tendered his resignation after the derailment of Taroko Express No. 408 on April 2, in which 49 people were killed and 244 injured.
It was the nation’s worst railway accident in nearly six decades. ....

Survivors and friends and family members of people who died in April 2’s train crash yesterday criticized the indictment of seven people over their alleged involvement in the incident as too lenient.
The Hualien District Prosecutors’ Office on Friday charged seven people over the crash, in which 49 people were killed and more than 200 were injured. ....

TAIPEI (The China Post) — Minister of Transportation and Communications Lin Chia-lung’s (林佳龍) resignation offer has been approved and will take effect on April 20, Executive Yuan spokesman Lo Ping-cheng (羅秉成) said on Thursday.
Lo said that the decision came after Lin reported to President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) on Wednesday.
He added that Lin already spoke with Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) on Tuesday.
In a press conference, the Cabinet spokesman said that Lin arrived at the Taroko train accident scene on April 2, which killed 49 people and then devoted himself to the railway repairment day and night. ....
