Dunedin Mayor Aaron Hawkins has refused to be drawn on a challenge to his earlier claim that the Southern District Health Board (SDHB) advised the city council not to go public when lead contamination was found in Waikouaiti-Karitane water.
After the no-drink notice was issued, Hawkins told Checkpoint council staff did not advise the public of the elevated lead level back in August, following advice from Public Health South.
However, RNZ reported yesterday that SDHB medical officer of health Dr Susan Jack said that was not the case. ....

New Zealanders are reluctant to call in sick despite feeling unwell because there was no one to cover them or there was too much work to do, a new survey has found.
The report for recruitment agency Onestaff revealed the top five reasons people were hesitant to take sick leave - with 53 per cent blaming being short-staffed as the number one reason. ....

Mini World's End: Missing youth's body found

The body of a youth who went missing while visiting the Mini World s End was found by Army Special Forces this afternoon, below a precipice of about 1300 feet.
Army Special Forces soldiers had descended to Mini World s End with the help of raffle ropes.
The police stated that the youth was missing since the night of 06 February. He had come with another group to watch Mini World s End, where the group was said to be staying in tents.
It is reported that the youth had left the place saying that he was going to the van in which the group had arrived due to the extreme cold of the night. ....
