Ferries busy as B.C. reopens non-essential travel provincewide

VANCOUVER
It was all hands on deck at BC Ferries Tuesday after the ban on non-essential travel within the province officially came to an end.
B.C. entered Step 2 of its COVID-19 restart plan at midnight, lifting many restrictions and once again allowing for recreational travel throughout the province.
Sailings aboard BC Ferries are expected to be fuller than they have been in months, as British Columbians take a much needed vacation or a trip to see family.
“I think it s exciting. It feels like maybe we re heading in the right direction. I think it s going to improve everyone s mental health,” said Elizabeth Chesley, a ferry passenger who was bound for Sechelt. ....

Ferry traffic down, people heeding calls to not travel

“There were a handful of customers denied travel on the six routes that cross the regional zones as per the provincial order,” Deborah Marshall, B.C. Ferries’ spokesperson, said Monday.
“There was no need to call authorities. It was more a matter of a few people not being fully aware of the order. We had extra staff just in case.”
The number of management and security staff had been boosted at the six routes that connect different health regions in case of issues with unhappy travellers.
Travellers are asked at ticket booths, or online if they are booking reservations, if their trip is essential. If it is not, then B.C. Ferries will not sell them a ticket. ....

Recreational travellers who leave health region could be fined $575

The new health order establishes three regions Vancouver Coastal Health and Fraser Health, Northern and Interior Health, and Island Health. It prohibits non-essential travel between them. The order also includes non-essential travellers from outside the province.
The order, under the Emergency Program Act, will remain in place until after the Victoria Day long weekend, ending May 25, said Farnworth.
“While this new legal order targets those who are travelling across regional zones for recreational purposes, the advice from [provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry] to stay local remains in place everywhere in B.C.,” Farnworth said. “Do not go to Whistler or Tofino – even on a day trip. Everyone should stay close to home.” ....
