Introduction
Good morning,
I would like to start this morning by acknowledging the extraordinarily hard work being done to suppress the COVID-19 curve for the third time. While still high, case numbers, hospitalisations and ICU numbers are coming down. Vaccines are being administered. Our perseverance is paying off as we begin another chapter in our fight against this deadly virus.
Announcements
Yesterday Government announced an extension of current Level 5 restrictions until the 5th of April.
The government also announced a safe return of in-school education and childcare services on a cautious and phased basis as set out in the revised plan for managing the virus – COVID-19 Resilience and Recovery 2021: The Path Ahead. ....

New cases of Covid-19 starting to fall in Kilkenny

Cases of Covid-19 have continued to fall in Kilkenny this week, with ten new cases reported yesterday.
This figure compares to 14 new cases reported on Monday evening and 16 new cases on Sunday and Saturday marking a significant decrease in daily case numbers seen in recent weeks.
According to the most recent figures 30 patients are being treated for the virus at St Luke’s Hospital including four people who are in the Critical Care Unit.
In the two-week period leading up to January 24 there were 440 reported cases in Kilkenny. The highest incidence rate of the disease in the county remains in the Castlecomer electoral area. ....

Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly TD has confirmed that the vaccination of the third group in the Government’s Vaccine Allocation Strategy will begin in February.
Under the Vaccine Allocation Strategy, people aged 70 and older will be vaccinated in the following order: 85 and older, 80-84, 75-79, 70-74.
Minister Donnelly said: “We have confirmed that the community vaccination programme will begin in February, subject to regulatory approval of AstraZeneca. Despite anticipated disruption to deliveries, which was announced on Friday, Ireland will receive a delivery of AstraZeneca vaccine within the expected range for February, although at the lower end of that range.  Delivery in March is likely to be more impacted and considerably lower than what was originally stated by the company.
