Initiative part of McGowan Government’s efforts to tackle alcohol-related harm
The State Government’s trial of a Banned Drinkers Register (BDR) will commence in the Kimberley this week, following a successful rollout in the Pilbara.
The initiative aims to reduce antisocial behaviour in Broome and Derby by restricting banned drinkers’ access to takeaway alcohol.
The two-year trial will investigate whether the measure can add to the McGowan Government’s wider efforts to tackle alcohol-related harm in Western Australia.
The BDR technology is supplied by Western Australian company Scantek. It allows businesses to scan customers’ identification, giving them a real-time tool to identify those who cannot legally be sold alcohol. ....

Woolworths is being criticised for divisive tactics during its push to build a new liquor store in Darwin near dry Indigenous communities.
Aboriginal leaders and community leaders have spent five years campaigning to Stop the Build of the Dan Murphy s superstore.
Indigenous health expert John Paterson, the chief executive at the Northern Territory Medical Service Alliance, said the construction, led by Woolworth’s subsidiary Endeavour Group, has divided the community.
“To me personally, it reminds me of the colonisers of this country,” he told SBS News.

NT alcohol policies reduce ICU admissions

The introduction of alcohol harm limitation policies in Central Australia from 2018 have had a marked effect on critical health figures, with a 38% relative reduction in Hospital Intensive Care Unit admissions associated with alcohol misuse, as well as a marked reduction in trauma admissions.
The figures, compiled by a Flinders Northern Territory team led by Dr Paul Secombe from the Intensive Care Unit at Alice Springs Hospital, reflect ongoing concerns about the number of ICU admissions associated with alcohol misuse.
Alcohol misuse is a disproportionately large contributor to morbidity and mortality in the Northern Territory, and the new study examines the effect of a raft of alcohol legislation reforms that came into effect in the NT in 2018, as part of the NT Government’s Alcohol Harm Minimisation Action Plan. ....
