‘Additional hands required at all levels’
The exponential increase in COVID-19 cases over the last two months has left government hospitals grappling with manpower shortage. Given the continuing surge and the steps taken to increase the number of beds, healthcare providers have called for immediate measures to recruit additional manpower at all levels doctors, staff nurses, technicians and hospital workers.
The State’s active case-load has increased 3.5 times over the last month. Several government hospitals that have been running to capacity are facing manpower shortage, with staff members already overworked. ....

Many healthcare providers/workers have tested positive for COVID-19 in the State. In a number of cases, family members of the doctors too have been infected.
In the last two days, a government doctor and two nurses lost their lives to COVID-19 in Tamil Nadu. With exhaustion setting in among health workers, the risk of getting infected is adding to their stress. ....

With cases continuing to surge in Tamil Nadu, doctors’ associations are worried about the “overburdened” healthcare infrastructure and have called for an intense lockdown to cut down disease transmission and step up infrastructural requirements.

Doctors' body suggests steps to tackle spread of COVID-19

Association demands resumption of counselling and payment of due incentives
The Tamil Nadu Government Doctors’ Association has given several suggestions to contain the spread of COVID-19. It suggested that organisations volunteering to administer vaccines should be given a target to inoculate a certain number of persons through mass vaccination drives. This would help to achieve herd immunity and thereby prevent the spread of the infection, the association said.
The government should ensure that groceries and essentials reach the doorsteps of residents, instead of them having to visit shops and market. Shops should be permitted to function for specific hours in the morning and evening to prevent crowding. ....
