CHENNAI: Of 100 students joining Class I, only 68 reach Class XII in Tamil Nadu.
While 39% of boys left school before reaching higher secondary, it was 25% for girls in 2019-20, according to Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) report. Of them, 13% of boys and 6% of girls dropped out in Class IX and X.
Citing the gulf between elementary and secondary education and geographical and economic factors as possible reasons for the high number of dropouts, experts urged TN to identify issues to improve retention.
Teachers fear the dropout rate may increase when schools reopen post pandemic as many students in Class IX to XII are working in shops, companies, factories to support their families. ....
