AGRA: A large police contingent was camping by the road leading to Aligarh’s Noorpur village on Sunday to deter any attempt to disturb law and order in the wake of VHP leader Sadhvi Prachi’s announcement to perform a ‘havan’ at a mosque there which was at the centre of a row involving people of two different faiths. Although the VHP leader didn’t turn up in spite of her announcement to visit the village till late evening, several activists of saffron outfits reached near the village and confronted the policemen who didn’t allow them to enter. The row began on May 26 when a wedding procession of a Dalit family was allegedly asked to stop the music for a while near a mosque where people were offering prayers. Some people in the wedding procession claimed that they were attacked by the people of the minority community.
India News: JHANSI: A newly-elected woman village pradhan, belonging to Scheduled Caste, has alleged that she was abused, forcefully evicted from her chair and ma.
Despite the fact that the local police assured protection to the 22-year-old groom and his family, he still fears an attack by upper caste men for defying casteist norms.
‘Move that smacks of brazen arrogance’ A group of human rights activists on Wednesday raised concerns over the appointment of former Supreme Court judge, Justice Arun Kumar Mishra, as the chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The Centre’s decision “smacks of brazen arrogance and indifference to public opinion and once again highlights the cynical disdain of the government for democratic norms and constitutional proprieties”. The activists pointed out that the selection of Justice Mishra by a committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was despite the objection of another committee member, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge. The Congress leader had suggested appointing someone from Dalit, Adivasi or minority communities, “considering that the bulk of victims of state abuse comes from these communities”.
Yet, awareness in the higher judiciary of the widespread misuse of such provisions to curb criticism of the government is, by itself, of not much use. The higher judiciary must take concrete action to prevent misuse of the law to curb dissent.
