Kannur district, which traditionally favoured the CPI(M) in the Assembly elections, is set to witness a fierce battle between the UDF and the LDF, with the BJP-led NDA too working hard to make a dent in the vote bases of the other two main fronts.
This time, 75 candidates are in the fray to fight for the 11 Assembly constituencies in the district. The LDF and the UDF led have fielded their candidates in all the 11 seats, while the NDA is contesting in 10, following the nomination of BJP district president N. Booths being set up in wake of pandemic situation
As many as 3,137 polling booths will be set up in Kannur for the upcoming Assembly elections. There were 1,858 booths in the last Assembly polls. An additional 1,279 booths will be set up this time as per the Central Election Commission’s recommendation to divide the booths with more than a thousand voters in the wake of the pandemic situation, District Collector T.V. Subhash has said.
Each booth will have five polling officials. With the addition of 1,279 booths, 20,000 officials will have to be deployed for polling duty alone, including 20 per cent reserve staff. In addition, more officers will have to deployed for the distribution of special postal ballots. ....

Despite a call by the authorities to follow COVID-19 norms, a huge number of people gathered in complete violation of the health protocol at the ‘Santhwana Sparsham’ adalat held in the presence of three ministers Health Minister K.K. Shylaja, Industries Minister E.P. Jayarajan and Port Minister Kadannappally Ramachandran at Taliparamba in Kannur on Thursday.
The Congress condemned the ‘double standards’ of the police which took action against its activists, who attended the ‘Aishwarya Kerala Yatra’ led by Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala, for violating COVID protocol. Kannur( Kerala) [India], February 4 (ANI): Police registered cases against 26 Congress leaders who organized the Aishwarya Kerala Yatra led by the Kerala Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala and over 400 people who gathered during the event for allegedly violating Covid-19 protocols.
The cases were registered at the Taliparamba police station in Kannur district.
Kannur District Congress Committee President Satheeshan Pacheni is also named in Covid-19 protocol violation case.
Sreekandapuram police in Kannur district has also registered cases against the local leaders of Congress on the same charges. Both Taliparamba and Sreekandapuram police registered these as suo motu cases. The cases have been filed under the Epidemic Diseases Act. ....
