The regional front of Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and jailed activist Akhil Gogoi’s Raijor Dal (RD) could have been a factor in the failure of the Congress-led ‘Mahajot’ or grand alliance in dislodging the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies in Assam.
The BJP-led ‘Mitrajot’ (group of friends) won 75 of the 126 Assembly seats in the State while the ‘Mahajot’ had to settle with 50. Mr. Gogoi was the lone winner for the regional front that engaged in “friendly fight” in a few constituencies. ....

Assam Election 2nd Phase Voting: Barring a few EVM (Electronic Voting Machine) glitches and sporadic incidents, polling in the 39 LACs (Legislative Assembly Constituencies) that went to poll in the second phase on Thursday is peaceful. The voters turnout in this phase is around 77 per cent.
A number of ministers are also in fray in 2nd phase. Rebel candidates seem to be a genuine threat for a number of candidates in this phase. Around 73 lakh voters cast their votes to seal the fate of 345 candidates on Thursday. ....

GUWAHATI: Denied ticket by his party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), two-time former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta has decided against contesting the upcoming Assam elections, his wife and former MP Jayashree Goswami Mahanta said.
“He has taken a decision not to contest the polls but he will keep working for the cause of regionalism,” she said. “He is hurt that the AGP leadership sold off regional sentiment to a national political party,” she added.
The Bahrampur MLA Mahanta, 68, returned from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi last week after undergoing treatment.
He has been serving as a legislator since 1985. In his Bahrampur seat in Central Assam, which he has been representing since 1991, the AGP is not contesting. The party offered the seat to ally BJP as part of their seat-sharing understanding. ....
