Area First Nations leaders blast Rustad for comments


Rustad’s question, which he posted before getting any confirmation from NH, was met with a flood of comments both condemning, and supporting the post which he has since removed.
Teegee noted he hoped NH had informed Rustad of the priorities of the vaccine and the fact nearly 36 per cent of people with COVID-19 in the NH region were First Nations, even though they make up less than 17 per cent of the region’s population. Teegee made the comment on Rustad’s original Facebook post before it was deleted.
“Before you make divisive comments that would stir hateful comments between First Nations people and non-First Nations citizens, you should check your facts,” Teegee wrote. ....

COVID-19 vaccines rolled out to the Indigenous community adjacent to Fort St. James Tuesday, Jan. 19.
Prince encourages members and non-members living on reserve to make an appointment through their health centre to receive their vaccine.
As the disease has resulted in Nak’azdli Whut’en staff working long hours to ensure the community’s safety, Prince provided a brief overview of upcoming projects.
A 32 unit-housing project is being eyed for 2022-2023. Planning has also begun on an Elder’s housing project.
“Our rental housing is doing really well and we’re actually in the black,” Prince added. ....

Health officials and First Nations leaders are urging people to stay vigilant over the holidays in one of the regions of B.C. hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Between Nov. 18 and Dec. 17 there have been 108 laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Nechako Local Health Area  a region with fewer than 13,000 people. That means nearly one per cent of the population has been infected in a month. ....
