Weyburn Police Chief Jamie Blunden explained how this rating translates to what the Weyburn Police Service is seeing on the streets for crime levels. “Stats Canada gives certain weight to different crimes. It’s kind of like a diving competition – the harder dives get a degree of difficulty starting score that is higher than an easier dive. Crime Severity stats are the same. For example, a homicide will have the highest ‘value’ assigned while a theft under $5,000 will have significantly lower ‘value’ assigned. Each of the crimes is given a value and Stats Canada then looks at all the crimes in our area that have been reported and assigned values,” he said, noting there are three categories for crime stats: overall crime severity index or CSI, the violent crime CSI and the non-violent CSI. ....
In recent years, cocaine was prevalent in the community, but in the last few months, any overdose calls involve the use of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. Since the start of 2021, the Weyburn police has responded 11 times to calls to assist the Weyburn EMS on a drug overdose but as Chief Blunden noted, they don’t even hear about most overdoses. In one particularly eventful weekend in January, there were two deaths and one overdose where the person was able to recover. More recently, WPS had three overdose calls from Feb. 19-21, and one person was taken to hospital in Weyburn then Regina in critical condition. ....
While growing up in Radville, VanDeSype was impressed with the RCMP officers who were stationed at the detachment there. “Even at the time, I didn’t envision myself becoming a police officer, but if I did, I knew I’d want to model myself after them,” he said, noting he later moved to Nanaimo, B.C., where he met his wife. At one point, she suggested to him to look into pursuing a law enforcement career, and he ended up being recruited to the RCMP. Taking the training at the RCMP Academy in Regina, he had been tapped to go back to B.C. for his first posting, but he made a request for a detachment back in his home province. ....
