Fire department closes 16 suites at problem-plagued Saskatoon condo building

The Saskatoon Fire Department has closed 16 suites at the troubled Prairie Heights condo bulding due to unsafe and unsanitary living conditions.
“Up until now we have been able to remedy the life safety issues in the building,” Fire Chief Morgan Hackl said in a news release.
“The conditions in a number of suites have degraded to such an extreme state the fire department can no longer, in good conscience, allow people to live there,  Hackl said.
Around 12 residents will be rehoused to safe, healthy accommodations and the Ministry of Social Services has established housing plans and transportation for each person based on their unique needs, the department said. ....

The Saskatoon Fire Department has closed 16 suites at 1416 20th Street West because of unsafe and unsanitary living conditions. The notice took effect at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Fire Chief Morgan Hackl says, “Up until now, we have been able to remedy the life safety issues in the building.” But, he says, “Following repeated inspections, orders to remedy issues, and tickets, the conditions in a number of suites have degraded to such an extreme state the Fire Department can no longer, in good conscience, allow people to live there.”
The latest inspection revealed hazards such as: No water to some suites, sewer waste back up, stolen copper pipes, food and human waste, cockroaches, and ovens being used as a heating source. The Department says about 12 residents will be rehoused to safe, healthy, accommodations. ....

Citing dangerous and unsanitary living conditions, Saskatoon’s fire chief says more than a dozen suites inside a notorious Saskatoon apartment building are being closed and its occupants moved to safe accommodations.
The fire department, as of Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., has “taken the necessary steps” to close 16 suites at the Prairie Heights building at 1416 20th Street West, Chief Morgan Hackl said on Thursday.
