DAR ES SALAAM, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) Tanzanian police said on Monday they have seized 160 firearms and arrested 68 suspected poachers in the last two months in a forest reserve in the country s southern region of Ruvuma.
The firearms and suspected poachers were respectively seized and arrested in special crackdowns jointly conducted by the police and an anti-poaching unit of the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA) in Liparamba forest reserve, said Simon Maigwa, the Ruvuma regional police commander.
Maigwa told a news conference that the seized firearms included 149 muzzle loaders, eight shotguns and three rifles, adding that the suspected poachers were charged in courts. ....

DAR ES SALAAM, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) Tanzanian police said on Monday they have arrested three suspected poachers in the country s southern region of Ruvuma with illegal possession of 20 kilograms of elephant tusks.
Simon Maigwa, the Ruvuma regional police commander, said the suspected poachers were arrested by police in collaboration with game rangers from the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority.
They were arrested on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. (local time) in the Songea municipality, Maigwa told a news conference, adding that the tusks were wrapped in plastic bags.
The seized tusks were an equivalent to killing two elephants, said the police official, adding that relevant authorities were working to establish the value of the tusks. ....

DAR ES SALAAM, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) Tanzania s three state-run conservation authorities are planning to create wildlife sanctuaries on Lake Nyasa s two major islands to make them tourist destinations, an official said on Monday.
Afrikanus Challe, a wildlife official for Ruvuma region, said plans to introduce sanctuaries for wild animals on the two islands of the lake shared by Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique were at an advanced stage.
Challe told a meeting of the Ruvuma regional consultative committee that the animal sanctuaries will be created jointly by the Tanzania National Parks, the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority and the Tanzania Forest Services Agency. ....
