Gaza Rocket Kills 2 Thais, Injures 8 Others in Israel

A Hamas rocket attack on an agricultural estate near the Gaza Strip killed two Thai nationals and injured eight others who were treated in an Israeli hospital, Thailand’s government said Wednesday.
The rocket strike in Moshav Ohad occurred amid heavy fighting that broke out earlier this month between Israel and Palestinian forces, and which has shown no sign of letting up. Thais are among at least tens of thousands of migrants from Southeast Asian countries who work in the Jewish State.
“The deaths of two Thai labors in Israel and the injuries of eight from the Hamas attack in Moshav Ohad near the Gaza Strip on May 18, 2021, inflicted the worst casualties among Thai labors since the beginning of Israeli-Palestinian conflicts,” Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Tanee Sangrat told reporters. ....

Three reporters from the Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB) have been arrested in Thailand, after fleeing the military junta’s accelerating crackdown on the press in Myanmar.
According to an “emergency statement” from Aye Chan Naing, DVB’s executive director and chief editor, the three journalists were arrested Sunday in Chiang Mai along with two activists during a random search by police. They have been charged with entering Thailand illegally. ....

The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs has decided to suspend issuance of certificates of entry (COE) to all foreigners travelling to Thailand from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal immediately.
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Thanee Saengrat said today that the decision, by the operations centre of the CCSA, came after a pregnant Thai woman and one of her three sons, who returned to Thailand last month from Pakistan and entered state quarantine,were found to be infected with the Indian COVID-19 variant.
He said, however, that Thais returning from these three countries, and India, can still enter Thailand, adding that the suspension of the issuance of COEs to foreigners is temporary,at a time when Thailand is on full alert to prevent the Indian variant or B.1.617.1 from crossing its borders. ....

Myanmar must end bloodshed, restore democracy: Widodo

The Burmese military must restore democracy and stop committing violence against citizens, Indonesian President Joko Widodo said after crisis talks with Burmese junta leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and Southeast Asian leaders yesterday.
The strongly worded statement followed a meeting of ASEAN in Jakarta, which marked the Burmese general’s first foreign trip since security forces on Feb. 1 staged a coup that ousted Burmese State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi.
Min Aung Hlaing has become the focus of international outrage over the coup and a subsequent crackdown on dissent that has left more than 700 dead. ....
