A year after the announcement,
the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (
BBMP) has finally taken a call on upgrading seven out of 13 bio-methanation plants in the city. The civic body had announced in December 2019 about its plan of reviving the seven plants.
The bio-methanation plants were supposed to be one of the steps to push for decentralised processing of
waste and reduce dependence on landfills under the Namma Kasa Namma Jawabdari (Our Waste Our Responsibility) programme. However, of the 13 bio-methanation plants at ....

Civic body will get
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is going to be richer, courtesy a
Bill passed earlier this month by the state legislature. While the civic body will be the beneficiary of the professional tax – currently going to the state exchequer –
BBMP has also been given the powers to collect entertainment tax. Both these taxes are estimated to provide an additional Rs 1,500 crore to BBMP’s kitty.
The BBMP will also start levying property tax based on the guidance value. This is expected to fetch additional revenue to the municipal corporation. While the civic body’s dependence on state government will reduce, questions are being asked whether the officials will be able to use the funds wisely. ....
