KOCHI: With Southern Railway cancelling many special trains from Tuesday citing low occupancy, regular passengers have found life more difficult. A few passenger organisations have shot off a letter to the railway authorities to revert the decision while others are planning to launch protests online
Much to the misery of inter-district passengers, many special trains passing through central Kerala will not be in service from Tuesday, with Southern Railway citing low occupancy as the reason. The decision to cancel 20 trains including weekend specials will be a big blow to office-goers and other passengers who rely on them to travel to Kochi and back amid the lockdown restrictions ....

Bringing respite to inter-district commuters and office goers, a pair of MEMU train services which link Ernakulam with Shoranur and Alappuzha respectively resumed service on Monday, almost a year after halting trips due to the pandemic.
With UTS and other mobile-phone-based services yet to be restored, the Railway has opened UTS counters in stations where the trains have stops so that those wanting to travel on general tickets and season tickets could buy them. The MEMU trains are being operated as express trains, having limited number of stops, Railway sources said. ....

‘Permission for entry through one gate causing hardships to passengers’
Railway passenger associations have demanded the reopening of alternative / second entry to the Ernakulam North and South railway stations and other prominent stations, since more trains have resumed operations.
Most passengers are reserving seats online and travelling, in order to prevent waiting at ticket counters. Permission for entry through only one gate has resulted in passengers, mostly women who regularly depend on trains for their commute to work, facing difficulties, said Thrissur Railway Passengers’ Association. ....
