The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has taken a serious view of the fact that the family had not received the body of remand prisoner P. Muthu Mano, who was murdered in Palayamkottai Central Prison, even after more than one and a half months of the conduct of post mortem.
Hearing a petition filed by A. Pavanasam, father of the deceased, a Division Bench of Justices T.S. Sivagnanam and S. Ananthi asked the petitioner’s counsel why the earlier order of the court to receive the body and perform the last rites was not complied with. It directed the counsel to appropriately advise the petitioner. ....

‘Chief Minister will make a positive announcement soon’
The visit of Medical and Family Welfare Minister Ma. Subramanian to the district on Wednesday has brightened the chance of realising the long-standing demand for a medical college in the district.
As the previous AIADMK regime got permission for starting 11 government medical colleges in the State in 2020, increasing the number of medical seats from 1,945 to 3,060, the demand for starting a medical college in Tenkasi grew stronger.
Collector G.S. Sameeran used the Minister’s visit to press this demand after explaining to him the measures being taken by the district administration to prevent the spread of COVID-19 through a power-point presentation. ....

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has quashed the criminal proceedings against cartoonist G. Bala that was instituted in 2017.
The cartoonist had been booked on charges of allegedly defaming then Chief Minister [Edappadi K. Palaniswami], the Tirunelveli Collector and the Police Commissioner in a caricature drawn by him following the usury related self immolation of a family in Tirunelveli.
Justice G. Ilangovan observed that there was no criminality involved in the cartoon drawn by the cartoonist and quashed the first information report registered against him by the Tirunelveli police based on the complaint by the then Tirunelveli Collector. The court observed that the petitioner wanted to express his anger, grief and criticism. ....
