Teacher at top girl's school and university forced to resign twice for sexual misconduct that carried on for decades


Allegations of sexual harm over decades have surfaced against a renowned early music specialist.
A prominent musician is accused of sexual misconduct with his students - including a teenaged high school student - over a span of 20 years. Auckland University now faces questions over the way it handled a complaint from a former student, who claims James Tibbles groomed and exploited vulnerable young women for sex.

In December 2020, the head of Auckland University s music school was called to a meeting to answer allegations of serious sexual misconduct, lodged against him by a former student.

Auckland University makes close to $1m profit on Parnell house bought for vice-chancellor


The sale brings to an end a year-long saga involving much scrutiny, including a formal investigation from the country’s top public sector watchdog.
The 2019 purchase pricked the ears of Auditor General John Ryan who, after a lengthy investigation, found the university had broken its own rules on transparency and was “unable to show a justifiable business purpose” for the purchase.
“Although the University might spend larger amounts of money elsewhere, $5 million is still a considerable amount of public money,” Ryan said in his report.
