Nova Scotia launches online course on recognizing and preventing sexual exploitation

The Nova Scotia government is releasing a free, online training course on identifying and responding to sexual exploitation of children and youth.
This eight-part course published today includes information on ways to offer support without judgment.
Community Services Minister Kelly Regan issued a statement saying anyone can be subjected to sexual violence, although she says young people and those from marginalized communities are more likely to be targeted.
Regan says being aware of child sexual exploitation and knowing what to look for are key to ending the violence and supporting survivors.
The minister says the training is for service providers, parents, teachers, first responders, counsellors and anyone who is acting as a support person or is concerned about sexual violence. ....

Saskatoon educator highlights need to better support victims of sexual violence

Liars. Attention seekers. These labels are slapped on people who disclose experiences of sexual harassment and violence, says Morgan Price.
The survivor or the victim is more often blamed or at least questioned with the validity of what they ve experienced, said Price, who is an education and outreach co-ordinator at the Saskatoon Sexual Assault and Information Centre (SSAIC). Price said victims of sexual or domestic violence aren t offered the same baseline of belief given to victims of less intimate crimes. ....

Some employees at Safe Passage in Northampton are claiming the domestic violence support center’s outward image isn’t lining up with how management is treating its staff internally.
Pointing to recent turnover among high-level staff as well as issues surrounding workplace safety, members of Safe Passage’s union say their demands regarding discipline and health policies are much needed but not being met by management. ....
