Michael Riley, the lawyer for Dondre Nesmith, who was charged Thursday night with the July 12 fatal shooting of Javier Flores, of Ansonia, argued that his client should be released because police had failed to secure an arrest warrant for Nesmith on the murder charge. “The law requires police seek an arrest warrant but they didn’t do that,” Riley said. A large group of Flores’ friends and family, the first large group allowed in a courtroom in the Golden Hill Street courthouse since the pandemic, sat forward in their chairs listening to the lawyer’s argument. ....

The 27-year-old New Haven County resident from Ansoniad was found around 11:27 p.m.on Monday, July 12 when Bridgeport Police responded to the area of Gregory Street and Rennel Court on the report of shots fired with a party down. Upon arrival, officers observed a crowd of citizens surrounding a vehicle parked on Rennell Court with an unresponsive man in the driver’s seat, said Captain Kevin Gilleran. The man was quickly transported to Bridgeport Hospital with a critical gunshot wound. He died early Tuesday, July 13, Gilleran added. ....
