Yosabeth Agonafer came to Fredericton in August 2018 to study at the University of New Brunswick. Now in her fourth year, she is helping other international students make their way in the job market in this country.
Yosabeth Agonafer came to Canada in 2018 from Ethiopia with plans to pursue chemical engineering at the University of New Brunswick in Saint John.
But the transition became difficult when she tried finding a job in this country and realized she needed some new skills, particularly in the use of social media. ....

New Brunswick organizations have partnered to make information on COVID-19 more accessible for newcomers to Canada
When Mohamed Bagha offers health advice to a newcomer to Canada in their first language, he said it helps relieve the stress of a big adjustment amid a pandemic.
The managing director of the Saint John Newcomers Centre said there has been a need for updates about COVID-19, particularly for those experiencing language barriers.
Just having that small tidbit of information is very comforting, Bagha said. ....

The Saint John Newcomers Centre hosted its first viewing party of films celebrating black culture on Zoom in honor of Black History Month on Friday.
The films will be streamed every Friday throughout February and alternate between in French and English-language audio, with respective subtitles, in support of the Newcomer Centre’s Francophone partners ARCf Saint-Jean, the Francophone School District South and Le Réseau en immigration francophone du Nouveau-Brunswick.
“The majority of the Black History Month events are happening in English so we thought it would be a great opportunity to highlight some of the Francophone films that are out there that highlight Black culture,” says Senior Communications Specialist Emily MacMackin. ....
