cyber: Spam War: Telcos to soon filter out unregistered commercial SMSes

ET had reported in November that the telecom regulator had imposed penalties collectively amounting to Rs 35 crore on eight operators including Bharti Airtel, Voda-Idea, Jio and BSNL for violation of TCCCPR on various counts, which allowed cyber criminals to issue fake SMSes.

In September 2020, telecom companies launched the first phase and started blocking SMS traffic originating from unregistered headers.
New Delhi: Beginning January 31, mobile phone companies will filter out commercial SMSes with unregistered content, as part of the second phase of blockchain implementation designed to check the flow of spam text messages.
This means any entity registered on the distributor ledger technology (DLT) platform with a unique header ID, for example AX-DOMINOS, will have to submit content templates of all SMSes they wish to deliver to their customers till January 31. Consumer groups say those pre-call covid messages are hugely problematic. They say the message being played across networks is estimated to be causing wastage of around 1.3 crore man-hours a day, and invariably holds up or delays distress calls from going through during emergencies.

Movies on television saw an 11% spike in advertising volumes in 2020 as compared to 2019, with the festive months of October and November witnessing the highest share of average ad volumes.
According to data from television advertising measurement firm TAM Media Research, though ads on film channels had been growing between 2016 and 2020, the past year saw the highest share of ad volumes for the genre at 23%. ....
