CoWIN portal crashes minutes after registrations open for vaccination of 18+

Minutes after the Central government opened the vaccine registration for those between 18-45 years on the CoWIN portal, the website crashed. Although the error was fixed after sometime, and many were able to register, it is unlikely if anyone could set an appointment as many cities showed barely any available vaccination centres at the time of publishing this story.
Even after one could get the portal to work, and able to get vaccination centre data, virtually none of them were accepting appointments for those below 45. Attempts to reach National Health Authority CEO RS Sharma in regards to the matter did not evoke any response. ....

Sharma told ET that private hospitals have been given the flexibility to make weekly instead of monthly procurements. “We have told them that they don’t need to procure for a month, they can make weekly payments and get vaccines. This should not deter them from publishing a timetable for a month,” he said.

The Centre has set a daily target of 5 million jabs in the third phase of the vaccination drive which will cover all those aged 45 and above from Thursday, National Health Authority CEO RS Sharma told ET. Private hospitals had been allowed more flexibility to meet this target, he said. ....

“I see this (home vaccinations) happening after some time. As of now, we have restricted it to vaccination centres as there is question of equity but going forward, since the idea is to vaccinate people as early as possible, home appointments would be offered,” said Sharma.
